Sat on their park bench like bookends
A newspaper blown through the grass
Falls on the round toes
of the high shoes of the old friends”
Just a shout out to my long time friends. People I’ve known since elementary school. (And that is a LONG time ago 🙂 ) My friend who went to Europe with me when we were 19 years old. That’s what everyone did at that time! Our parents gulping their concerns down, and putting a brave face on it. The adventures we had – with so little money (scares me now!). Roommates from college. Friends from my very first ‘industry’ job.
All now ‘old friends’ to me. No back story having to be provided when we talk. How precious you are to me. How wonderful it is to be accepted exactly as I am – no matter how much time passes by. Get together and we are just yappin’ away like no time has passed. And all those precious memories revisited as we sit around laughing and crying as we remember them.
And none of these dear friends gives a good cahoot that I am not drinking any more. One of these dear friends, we drank a good bit in our day, told me that he too has stopped, as his liver is on a ‘witness protection program’. LOL. A very dryly funny man, but serious about not drinking these days.
Life goes by fast…. treasure these people! Don’t take these long time friends in your life for granted. It is absolutely a beautiful part of being alive and a human being. As I wrote before – we’re all just walking each other home. We need each other.
