“Slip slidin’ away
Slip slidin’ away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you’re slip slidin’ away”
— Paul Simon
I was reflecting on how drinking is like a slip ‘n’ slide (do you remember them?). Over the years I had slipped ‘n’ slided myself from social to self-medicating – to problem drinker.
I know many people who have been drinking as long as I have – and they never developed a drinking problem. My gang of three of the longest-time friends I have – dating back to Jr high school, not one of them has a drinking problem. To this day, they’ll have a cocktail, and perhaps a glass of wine with dinner, and THAT IS IT. They just play slip ‘n’ slide all day long.
I, on the other hand, have had my last go on the slip ‘n’ slide. After this last bottoming out at self-medicating, I thankfully accepted that I could no longer just get up and run back into line to have another go at the game of slip ‘n’ slide. No, I really am not able to drink any more.
