I’d like to thank the Academy

Here it is, six months of sobriety.

January 1, 2018 I set down my wine glass.

That means I’ve not had a drink in six consecutive months.  January, February, March, April, May and June.  It’s been many, many years since I can make that claim.

Here I am, six months down the line.
Half way through the year.
I feel like I have won an Oscar for Best Sober Self :-).

And now, to accept the award for Best Sober Self, the Academy welcomes to the stage…

Me

(applause, applause, applause)

And as one does in these situations, I sweep up to the stage to accept my Award and thank everyone who helped me along the way.

goldstar⇒ I thank all my lucky stars and the mixed bag of what-I-believe-to-be a higher power.

⇒ I thank myself for believing in myself. Won’t pretend every day was a breeze and easy! But thank you me, for believing in me, and never giving up on me. (Yeah, I know, it came close a couple of times to all falling apart. But we did it! So far!)

⇒ I’d like to thank my family and friends. For being in my life, for accepting me exactly as I am, for being a part of the fabric of my life’s journey. And simply for being.

⇒ I thank my therapist who helped me see the light and possibilities ahead as I crawled in, learned to stand up again – and then walked away from a very difficult time in my life. I found the strength to turn and face into the next part of my life. 🙂 It’s a joy to once again be me, fully realized – smiling and saying ‘hey life, bring it on!’ (That is the perfect Hollywood version. I do have a bit to go with the connection to me and the leaving the past behind. But sometimes you gotta fake it to make it.)

⇒I’d like to thank this moment, right here, right now. (Thank you too Jon Kabat Zinn for bringing the concept of Mindfulness into the mainstream.)

⇒ And I’d also like to thank those of you reading this. Your likes thrill me, your comments make me feel we’ve built a community.  Every single one of you are AMAZING – each in a different part of your sobriety journey.

In no defined order at all,  those who have commented and/or liked.

** Pictured above is one of my favorite actresses, Bette Davis, accepting an Academy Award for her performance in Jezebel (1938). She should have also received one for All About Eve (1950) for her role as Margo Channing. One of my all time favorite films.

The name of my blog is taken from a Margo Channing quote in the film: “Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.” I’ve paraphrased with fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy year! All 365 days!
