Fastening my seatbelt …

Day 1.

So here we are, January 1st, 2018. A very significant date. I have just finished reading Clare Pooley’s inspirational new book The Sober Diaries.

This is Day One of my sobriety. I will use this blog as an anonymous space to share my thoughts and feelings as I continue my journey for the next 365 days. One Year. That’s what Clare did – documented her first year by blogging daily. Now it’s my turn.

What’s the inspiration for the name of this blog? I am a movie buff. Most specifically early Hollywood films.

My very favorite film is the 1950 ‘All About Eve’ – starring Bette Davis as Margo Channing, a highly regarded but aging Broadway star. Anne Baxter plays Eve Harrington, an ambitious young fan who insinuates herself into Channing’s life, Bette_Davisultimately threatening Channing’s career and her personal relationships. The dialog is snappy, witty, sometimes cruel, but always sophisticated. Ms. Davis and George Sanders have some terrific lines.

One of the many famous quotes from that film is Davis’s–  “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.”

I’m ready!

I’ve set down my cocktail (wine is my self-medicating choice). Stubbed out my cigarette (a pretend one, I don’t smoke. So glad I don’t have that problem!).

But I will keep the sassy Ms. Davis attitude,  the fabulous dress and sparkly jewelry.

Goodbye to 2017. Thank God it’s now in the rear view mirror. Much of it was horrible, some of it amazing – and all of it was an experience. As in ‘experience’… some of which I could have done without!

I am fastening my seatbelt for my bumpy year ahead – every single day of it. All 365 of ’em will be sober and full of gratitude. That’s the plan – even knowing some of the bumps ahead, such as the ‘Wine Witch’, the ‘Wall’, and Wine O’Clock.

It won’t be smooth sailing, but I’m sticking to my promise to myself.

I am determined. It’s time.
